Multilateralism and Peace

The Missing Peace or Piece?

Across the globe, there are extraordinary young people creatively seeking ways to prevent violence and consolidate peace. However, many are frustrated by the tendency of their Governments and international actors to treat youth as a problem to be solved, rather than as partners for peace.

Multilateralism is important for creating and maintaining peace, improving the quality of our lives and promoting human rights. Multilateralism is also crucial for tackling complex global challenges like climate change, cyber, food and water security, gender and health crises. When countries tackle problems together, the best outcomes are inevitable.

Building on UN Security Council resolution 2250 adopted in 2015, which sets out international commitments on youth, peace and security, means galvanizing youth action to prevent violent extremism and contribute to reconciliation and peace building is major action point by Stakeholders, Civil Societies and Actors.

Youth Action

For young people to have an influence on their societies and own their lives, they need an enabling environment with peace, justice and inclusion. Young people bring to the forefront the major issues in their communities and countries, and their engagement often serves as the connecting tissue between diverse peace efforts.

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. Youth are the torchbearers of the 2030 Agenda – young people all over the world are contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Recognizing the importance the role of youth in promoting peace and security in Africa as expressed via Article 17 of the African Youth Charter and the landmark adoption of UN Security Council resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security, this summit has become a necessity to advance, shape and re-echo the critical roles played by the youth.

Engaging young people and youth community leaders in peace efforts, decision-making provides an avenue to constructively influence areas that directly impact their lives.
